Officials say NYC aviation hub will be back to full capacity on May 23
Repairs on a sinkhole near a runway at LaGuardia International Airport in Queens, N.Y., continued on May 22 heading into Memorial Day weekend, delaying flights for the third straight day.
One of two runways, said to be 4-22, was set to remain closed until morning on May 23, according to media reports. The sinkhole was found along its edge on May 20.
After the sinkhole was discovered, crews deployed ground-penetrating radar to pinpoint areas to repair. Engineers continued to survey the runway on May 22.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey initially said the airport would be back to full capacity on May 22 but later opted to keep it closed one more day “out of an abundance of caution.”
Authority officials did not indicate what may have triggered the sinkhole, but ABC News cited reports on May 22 that it was possibly due to an «ongoing fuel line tunnellng project» at the airport, but with no further detail.
