Recently completed bridge is key link near hydropower dam
A concrete bridge in southwestern China partially collapsed Nov 10, following a landslide on one of the approaches. The Hongqi Bridge—which completed construction earlier this year—had been closed to traffic the day prior after cracks and slope deformation were discovered at one end of the bridge. No fatalities or injuries were reported.

The concrete bridge is located at the Shuangjiangkou Dam, also known as the Shuangjiangkou Hydropower Station, near Ma’erkang City, the capitol of Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province. A major link for the region, the 758-m bridge carries National Highway 317.
The mountainous region is seismically active, but no earthquake was reported as a cause for the landslide or collapse.
According to reports in local media, a landslide at one end of the bridge destroyed the approach and caused approximately 130 m of the bridge to collapse. The bridge features a main span of 220 m, with piers up to 172 m tall.
The Hongqi bridge was built by Sichuan Road and Bridge Group, which ranks 39th on ENR’s 2025 Top Global Contractors list and 195 on the 2025 Top International Contractors.
